The International Association of Professional Birth Photographers (IAPBP) recently announced the winners of their 11th annual Birth Photography Image Competition. This competition celebrates the finest labor and delivery images of 2021 and recognizes photographers who have captured the wonder and raw emotion of childbirth, as well as moments of loss.
This year’s competition was especially meaningful as it recognized the resilience of birth photographers who have had to navigate unforeseen challenges in recent years. The winners were selected from five main categories: birth details, labor, delivery, postpartum, and hardship and loss – a new category introduced this year.
The IAPBP director, Liz Cook, expressed her pride in the entrants and highlighted the breathtaking body of work that shared life’s most powerful moments from 2021. Brazilian photographer Bárbara Aviz of Bárbara Aviz Fotografia won first place with her heartwarming image titled ‘A Touch of Love’.

In the Best in Birth Details category, U.S. photographer Brittney Hogue was celebrated for her post-birth image titled “Nuchal,” which captures the intricate details of a newborn’s neck.
Finally, U.S. photographer Natalie Weber received an Honorable Mention for her heart-rending image “The Reach,” which shows a mother reaching out to touch her stillborn baby’s hand.
