Breaking and foreign news CBS News has learned that classified documents belonging to President Biden from his time as Vice President were discovered at the Penn Biden Center, a policy research center here in Washington DC, this of course follows the Consequences on possession of former President Trump’s classifieds. documents at Mar-A-Lago that the FBI seized this summer so for more we have CBS News correspondent Adriana Diaz joining me now Adriana what a story tell us more Caitlin this is an exclusive report From CBS, we have learned that three sources have confirmed to us that the classified documents were located in the Biden Center now this is a think tank it is a Foreign Policy Research Institute here in Washington and what we have learned we have asked the White House repeatedly commenting on this we learned late today from the White House that this was on November 2nd.
President Biden’s lawyers were at the Biden Center clearing out office space because the president had office space here in this building after his time as vice president, so they were clearing out office space and inside a locked closet with key they located classified material they recognized the classified marks as soon as they did they said they had stopped working and contacted the White House counsel office tells us it is a small number of documents, about 10 and at this point we are not sure they haven’t given us information about the nature of the documents how severe or sensitive they are but even an extremely sensitive document could be problematic of course so what happened from there this information went through a chain, the attorneys contacted the White House Office of Counsel, the Office of White House Counsel nca, in turn, contacted the National Archive, where the documents should have been located, that is the normal protocol, the National Archive was contacted.
The Department of Justice has learned that the Attorney General himself has contacted the US Attorney in Chicago John J. Ohn Lausch to take a look at this situation to review the documents that he came here to DC to do it and also to determine other factors of how they ended up in this place, then he will present the findings of his fights to the attorney general, we know he’s already updated the attorney general recently, but this review is nearing completion once it’s concluded once he’s presented what who knows the Attorney General, the Attorney General will decide if further investigation is warranted, either an FBI investigation or possibly appointing a special counsel which would be huge and this of course as we noted comes on the heels of the documents found in Mar-A-Lago if the White House has already
responded or they are referring their lawyers, the White House has spoken to us, we had multiple requests to come nary of the White House and we got a statement that just came in from the White House where they explain how this all happened and basically give us The Tick Tock timeline of where these documents were found, what happened from there, what I just explained and we were also told that the National Archives retrieved the documents the day after they were found so this was quick and keep in mind this happened on the 2nd of November that’s before. the midterm elections the other important distinction that we’ve been talking about with former federal prosecutors is that when you look at this situation and the Mar-A-Lago one there is a difference in both scope and scale in terms of the Mar-A-Lago scale A-Lago is where there were over 300 documents that were classified were recovered in terms of this case we are seeing
approximately 10 they tell us now we don’t know what is in the documents but what we do know is that in the case of Mar-A-Lago there were documents related to the communication between the president and Kim Jong-un, the dictator of North Korea, as well as information about nuclear secrets of foreign countries that we do not know what is in the documents that were found. at the Biden Center that belonged to President Biden during his time as Vice President so that’s the key question here, that all of this absolutely stands and how did they get there as part of that timeline Adriana Diaz I know you’ve been giving this news exclusively on CBS thank you for making it here and we will continue your reporting tonight on CBS Evening News stay with us you have more CBS News airing ahead of you
